Wazir Ibrahim Suleman Haji

Period: (1889- 1959)

Ibrahim Suleman’s ancestors came from Kutchh, and a certain Rahim among his forefathers took his abode in Jerruk, Sind. Rahim had two sons, Haji and Merali. The son of the latter was Alidino, known as Aloo, who was present during the ascension ceremony of Imam Sultan Mohammed Shah at Bombay in 1885. The former Haji had a son, called Ghulam Hussain, also known as Ghulu or Wazir Ghulu. Since he was the breeder of the hawks, the people also called him Ghulu Ba’azwala in Jerruk. He was well-versed in Persian, therefore, Imam Hasan Ali Shah took him to Bombay in 1844 as an interpreter. He also used to translate the Persian farmans of the Imams in Indian languages. He served three Imams in India, and notably as a religious tutor of Imam Sultan Muhammad Shah. Imam Hasan Ali Shah also vested him the title of Wazir. He also attended the ascension ceremony of Imam Sultan Muhammad Shah in 1885, and died in 1895 at Bombay. In his letter dated 23rd May, 1953 addressed to Wazir Dr. I.S. Haji, the grandson of Wazir Ghulam Hussain Haji, Imam Sultan Muhammad Shah said, “Your grand-father was one of our greatest servants and he played a great part in the early years of my Imamate. It can also be said of your father that he was a great and most devoted servant.”

It will be interesting to learn that Wazir Suleman Haji presented the following historical photograph before Imam Sultan Muhammad Shah in 1954 at Karachi, and humbly asked to recognize his forefathers from it:-

The Imam took the pen at once, marked and wrote the names of Aloo and Goloo (Ghulu) on the photograph with his
1000
own handwriting.

Wazir Ghulam Hussain Haji was married twice. He had two sons from his first wife, i.e., Dawood and Suleman; and one son and three daughters from his second wife, i.e., Ashiq Ali, Dariakuli, Fiji and Shireen.

The most prominent among them was Suleman, known as Dr. S.G. Haji (d. 1924). He had four sons from his first wife, – Col. H.S. Haji, Dr. C.S. Haji, Wazir I.S. Haji and Dawood. The second wife of Dr. S.G. Haji was Shireen, the daughter of Walji Punja and the cousin of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, and she was the mother of Akbar, Asghar, Saleem, Khatija, Zainab, Fatima, Sher Banu, Dawlat and Mariam.

Wazir I.S. Haji or Ibrahim Suleman Haji was a well-known figure among the Ismailis of Pakistan, India, Africa and Burma as the Honorary Private Secretary of Imam Sultan Muhammad Shah. He was born in Karachi in 1889 and was educated in Sind Madressah-tul-Islam. He organized the Muslim students of different Indian colleges as a kind of association when they presented an address in a silver casket to Imam Sultan Mohammed Shah in Bombay as their humble token of appreciation of the most indefatigable services in the cause of Muslim University at Aligarh.

Soon after graduation, Wazir I.S. Haji went to England in 1914 for higher studies as a special student of the Imam. He was called to the Bar (Grays Inn) in 1917. He passed B.Sc. (Economics) in 1918 from the London University, and was the first Muslim to achieve this distinguished academic degree. He arrived in Karachi, where the Panjibhai Club accorded him a warm reception on May 3, 1919. On his return to Bombay, he started his practice as a Barrister. He was also elected as a member of the Bombay Municipal Corporation.

Before his appointment as a Presidency Magistrate in 1934, he was a joint Hon. Secretary of the Bombay Presidency Muslim League with Muhammad Ali Jinnah as a President. Both at the Bar and also on the Bench, Ibrahim Suleman Haji had several famous cases to deal with. He had shown considerable forensic acsen and judicial ability in his legal career. After he retired in 1944, he resumed his practice, and became the Chief Justice of Janjira State (1945-1948).

Wazir I.S. Haji was appointed the member of the Ismaili Council in Bombay in 1921. Not only during the period of the Diamond jubilee, but also subsequently worked as the Honorary Secretary of the Imam. He also acted as the Honorary Private Secretary of Prince Aly Khan during his visit to India in 1952. He was also the member of the Ismaili Federal Council for India and the Vice-President of the Ismailia Association for India. He was finally appointed the President of the Federal Council for India (1958-1963).

Col. Jamal Nasr, the President of Egypt visited India in April, 1960. During a function held in Bombay on April 9, 1960 by the ten organizations, including the Ismailia Federal Council for India, presented an honour to the Egyptian President. Wazir I.S. Haji represented the Ismailis and presented a silver casket to him. Wazir Akbar H. Merchant, the President of Bombay Council garlanded him. When Col. Jamal Nasr departed for Cairo, he sent a message of goodwill to the Federal Council through his Consul in India and admired the Ismaili community. He also sent his photo framed with silver along with an autograph in it. Wazir I.S. Haji sent its report to the Imam on May 6, 1960. Hazar Imam sent following message on May 12, 1960:-

My dear Haji,
I have received your letter of 6th May and am pleased to know that the presentation of the Casket to President Nasser was a success.

During the war between India and China at the end of 1962, Wazir I. S. Haji called an urgent meeting of the Federal Council for India and resolved to make an appeal to the Indian jamats to contribute to the Prime Minister National Defence Fund. The copies of the appeal were read in all Jamatkhanas in India, and it was also endorsed to Zakir Hussain (1897-1969), the President of India on
1000
November 8, 1962. The President sent following message on November 12, 1962 that:-

Dear Haji Saheb,
Thank you for your letter of the 8th November.

I am happy to know that an Appeal has been issued by H.R.H. Prince Aga Khan’s Federal Council for India for contributions to the National Defence Fund. I am deeply touched by the patriotic determination that I know lies behind these efforts. As you know we have difficult times ahead, but with the cooperation of all citizens, we shall, God willing, see through them.

On the other hand, the Imam also sent a telegraphic message to the Indian Ismailis through Federal Council on November 12, 1962 that:-

I am glad my spiritual children in India are solidly supporting Prime Minister’s call to nation. I am happy to read your timely and practical Appeal to jamats jointly with local Councils. I expect my spiritual children to do their duty loyally and contribute generously. I give my best loving paternal maternal blessings to them for their sacrifice during National Emergency. Please convey to jamats they are always in my thoughts and near my heart in my prayers for early peace with success. Affectionately Aga Khan.

In response to his call, the Ismailis alone in Bombay contributed Rs. 88,000/- in a day for the Prime Minister Defence Fund. The Ismaili delegation led by Wazir I.S. Haji met Shri Jawaharlal Nehru, the Prime Minister of India at Delhi on December 17, 1962. The delegation presented a letter of the Imam to the Prime Minister, declaring the donation of two lac rupees.

Wazir I. S. Haji retired from Federal Council for India as a President on March 21, 1963. He was invested the title of Alijah, Itmadi and then as a Wazir on March 21, 1960.

He was also a good writer and compiled few articles, such as “He Lives in Our Grateful Hearts” (“Ismaili”, Bombay, August 4, 1957), “His Highness Sir Sultan Muhammad Shah The Aga Khan III” (Ibid. July 13, 1958), “My First Political Speech” (Ibid. August 10, 1963)

He died on Sunday, October 23, 1966 at Bombay. The Imam sent following telegraphic message:-

28th October, 1966
AGAFEDERAL
BOMBAY
Was much grieved to hear of sad demise of Vazir Haji. I send my most affectionate paternal maternal loving blessings for the soul of late Vazir Haji and I pray that his soul rest in eternal peace. Vazir Haji’s long devoted services to my jamats of all India as President of my Federal Council for many years and as a member of many institutions in India will always be remembered by my spiritual children and myself. Kindly convey my most affectionate loving blessings to Varasiani Izzatkhanu and family for courage and fortitude in their great loss.

Few words must be added for his wife, Varasiani Izzat Khanum (1899-1984). She was well educated and a keen worker in social welfare field. In 1935, when the Imam established the Health Board Centre Committee in Bombay, she was appointed its member and subsequently became its Hon. Secretary. She was one of the two first lady members of the Ismaili Council in Bombay. In 1939, Imam Sultan Mohammed Shah appointed her as a member of the Governing Body of Kathiawar Health Centre, and she became its Chairperson between 1940 and 1953. In 1946, she worked in several committees during the Diamond jubilee. She organized ladies volunteer in the camps to look after the small children, and was awarded the Gold Medal by the Imam. In 1952, she was summoned at Calcutta, then at Delhi to discuss with the Imam and Mata Salamat on Health Centres and Child Welfare in India. She was vested the title of Huzur Mukhiani, Alijiani and then most coveted title of Varasiani in 1951. Upon the death of her husband, she donated a sum of Rs. 10,000/- to The Ismaili General Hospital, Bombay for a permanent bed in the name of her husband and herself. She died at Bombay on August 18, 1984 at the age of 85 years.

How To Groom Guinea Pigs

While most small animals don’t want much grooming, guinea pigs are different. Their teeth, pelt, and nails all want some express attention on a common footing. A guinea pig’s front teeth prolong to grow throughout their intact life. If they are allowed to grow without any limit, the guinea pig will find it upsetting to eat and will, therefore, halt intake altogether.

The best thing you can do is to give your guinea pig with hard equipment to chew on: carrots and other hard vegetables, chew firewood or blocks, or even tree brushwood. Even although you offer these resources, however, you will hardship regularly to confirm the guinea pig’s teeth to make steady they aren’t fitting unmanageable. Check to see if the teeth are spinning private because this is a show of undue growth.

If you do remark that your guinea pig’s teeth are receiving too long, then you essential to take him to a vet and get them trimmed down. Never try to lower a guinea pig’s teeth yourself! Your vet will have the correct tools and experience to safely sleek the teeth to a typical piece.

Another tricky that sometimes arises with guinea pig’s teeth, particularly if they aren’t receiving all the vitamins they poverty in their diet, is that the tips of teeth may solve off. This can also make it tough for the guinea pig to eat. Take the cavy to your vet and nosh him a softer diet until the fang grows back suitably.

Guinea pigs’ mustache also needs to be taken nurture of commonly. Keep in tended the guinea pigs with longer coat are vacant to require more grooming than little-haired cavies.

For dumpy-haired guinea pigs, you
1000
necessary to acquire a small brush and then use it on their wool at slightest once a week. The combing serves numerous purposes. For one, it prevents their whiskers from matting up and tangling. It also removes any chunks of dirt that may become varied up in the fleece. Because their pelt is passing, you maybe will never necessity to slim or cut it.

Long-haired guinea pigs are a different story. They necessary to be thoroughly brushed at least once per day every day. If you neediness to go out of civic for even a fasten of living, You will should to desert your long-haired guinea pig with somebody who can brush it for you since it doesn’t take long for the locks to get horribly tangled. In actuality, even combing it once per day won’t be enough to impede all the tangles from forming.

You will also should to do something with the curls when it gets too long since it grows another crawl in chunk every month. If you intend on viewing the guinea pig, You will should to wrap up the garnish curls so that it doesn’t get trapped up around the animal’s feet or mixed up in the urine and feces. Special wraps are presented, but You will want to link a breeder or guinea pig bash to find out where to goods them. If you don’t idea on screening your guinea pigs, You will need to edge your guinea pig’s curls every pair of months. Don’t cut the curls too small. You want it just tiny enough so that it won’t interfere with your guinea pig’s movement.

Regardless of the font of guinea pig you have, You will also want to do periodic inspections of its coat to test for bedbugs. Lice are small sallow parasites that look like tiny worms. Guinea pigs often contract bedbugs from hay and from other guinea pigs. If you do see bedbugs on your guinea pig, you don’t have to be alarmed. Generally, the bedbugs will sojourn on the guinea pigs and will not soar against your children or into your home. However, the lice do need to be treated rapidly. Your vet should give you with a shampoo that will slaughter the lice. Shampoo your guinea pigs and thoroughly hygienic their cages, then recap seven living later. You must recur the manner because it takes a week for lice eggs to produce and you want to make really to execute any of those remaining babies.

Finally, your guinea pig’s nails need to be trimmed regularly also. While rowdy guinea pigs’ nails are obviously worn down to an appropriate strip, this does not appear in enslaved guinea pigs. Lengthy nails can be sore to the guinea pig and to the people who practice him, bonus they can decode off or get snagged which can begin promote injury to your cavy.

You should tolerate your vet or professional guinea pig groomer to show you how to clip their nails the first time because it is more complicated than extra your fingernails. Like most animals, guinea pigs don’t like to be restrained. It makes them feel vulnerable, and they’ll resist as much as they can which makes garnish their nails tiring. Your vet will be able to show you ways to restrain the animal so you safely downright the garnish.

More importantly, the guinea pig’s nails contain blood vessels much like a dog’s. If you neat too brusque, You will cut into one of those vessels and your guinea pig will bleed copiously. When this happens you must impede the flow immediately! It won’t take long for your small pet to bleed to casualty if you do nothing. Many pet supplies advertise a powder that stops the bleeding promptly. You may want to ask your vet what he recommends.

If you’re anxious about hurtful your pet’s toenails too short, you may be better off trimming them just a little bit but more frequently.

Except for combing the guinea pig’s pelt, all other parts of the grooming process should be done by an adult, not a youngster. Clipping nails, trimming hair, and inspecting teeth should never be done by a teen. The guinea pig could become uneasy and could puncture out of fright for their own security. Or the child could make a misstep that co
uld ground nuisance or injury to the guinea pig.

Catahoula Leopard Dog Size Hernando Desoto And General Character

The Catahoula Leopard Dog/’s size ranges from 20-26/” and weighs between 50-90 lbs, with a few individuals larger. Most males average 60-70 lbs in lean working condition and are about 24/” tall. As a working dog, Catahoulas have been bred more for temperament and ability than for appearance. As a result, the physical characteristics of the Catahoula are somewhat varied.

This breed has also been referred to as the /”Catahoula Cur/”. The origins of the Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dog came into existence through chance breeding and some planned breeding. The Indians in and around Louisiana used the Red Wolf, which then roamed Louisiana during this period, to locate game, much in the same manner as hunters use their dogs today.

Hernando DeSoto, apparently (it is recorded) had traveled from Florida into Louisiana, bringing with him the /”War Dogs/” that had made the journey to the New World. The breeds that were referred to as War Dogs were the Greyhound and the Mastiff.

Research has shown that the Mastiff type of dog that accompanied him was probably those known as the “Alano Mastiff” of Spain, which are now extinct. These Mastiffs had a reputation of being able to pull down very large game with ease. DeSoto utilized their abilities to persuade the Indians to provide information on the whereabouts of Gold and Treasure. Mostly those already owned by the Indians.

After suffering defeat in battle, DeSoto abandoned his War Dogs which were allowed to roam freely. They bred and interbreed with each other along with the Red Wolf. The offspring of the various breedings were then used by the Indians, and became known as the “Wolf Dog.” The Wolf Dog, which is mentioned in Louisiana History, as well as most history book
1000
s covering this era, was the name given to them by Henri Tonti during one of his visits to Louisiana.

The Catahoula Bulldog has been around for over 100 years. They are a crossbreed between the American Bulldog and the Louisiana Catahoula Leopard dog. In order to understand what this cross exactly means, first read my article about the Catahoula Leopard dog.

Breeders of the ‘Catahoula Bulldog” say it was bred for two reasons. First, ranchers and hog-hunters have used “Catahoulas” for many years to herd cattle and hunt hogs, but, to catch hogs, they had to carry a “catch-dog” with them. According to the Catahoula Bulldog fanciers, most “Catahoulas” were neither big enough, nor tough enough, to catch. The “American Bulldog” has an impeccable reputation as a catch-dog. Therefore, they say, when the “American Bulldog” is crossed with a “Catahoula”, you get a bigger, tougher dog which will work cattle and also catch hogs when needed.

The Catahoula Leopard dog is also said in many places on the web to have originated from the Nordic wolfhound. In 1979 the Catahoula dog was made the state dog of Louisiana.

There typical features are white and black further that is rather spotty. They have a sleek form, with plenty of muscle. These dogs have a long tail, thin legs, and droopy ears.

They can be white and tan as well. The coat is short, coarse, and usually tight to their bodies. You may mistake them for a mixed Labrador based on their appearance and frame.

Like most herders the Catahoula leopard dog offers a wonderful temperament for families. They are independent, protective, and territorial, but extremely affectionate with their family. Their characteristics make them good for herding and watch dogging. You will find they are aloof with strangers.

They are best with an active master they can get respect from. You will also want to check with a dog breeder regarding children and other pets with the Catahoula leopard.

Should You Choose A Shih Tzu? Pros And Cons

Shih Tzus can be a joy or a pain depending on your situation, and like any breed there are pros and cons. Here are a few things to consider:

Pro: They have the ideal temperament for singles or couples with older kids
Shih Tzus are people dogs – outgoing, confident and alert. While they may appear somewhat arrogant on sight, the breed usually possesses a sweet-natured temperament. Shih Tzus can go from being the ultimate TV-watching couch potato companion to playful pet at the dangling of a toy or toss of a treat. These little guys seem to know they’re irresistible and enjoy being treated like royalty. But all the spoiling their owners lavish them with is returned a hundredfold with their fierce loyalty.

Con: They are not always good for babies or young children
Because Shih Tzus are used to being the center of attention, they can get jealous of babies or young children who constantly need adult supervision. And an older Shih Tzu may snap if bothered by boisterous kids who are not respectful of its space. But some Shih Tzus are more tolerant, and if pup and child are introduced properly at an early stage, they may get along swimmingly.

Pro: The breed requires minimal exercise
Unlike other action-loving breeds, Shih Tzus are usually content with a short walk around the block or indoor play sessions. If you have a yard, letting your Shih Tzu out for brief periods during the day will thrill him, but this breed is also well suited for apartment dwellers.

Con: High maintenance when it comes to grooming
The Shih Tzu is a long-haired breed, and without regular brushing, it can become a matted, knotted mess. If you can’t commit to setting time out daily to comb your dog’s fur, you’ll have to make regular appointments with the local dog groomer for frequent trims to keep his coat
1000
short and clean. Shih Tzus also require a weekly bath and nail clipping.

Pro: A storied history
If you want a piece of history ambling about your house, look no further than the Shih Tzu. Based on the breed’s appearances in ancient Chinese paintings, it is thought that Shih Tzus have been around since 624 AD and while the breed’s origin is a subject of much debate, they were known to be part of the Chinese court.

Con: A history of health problems
While generally healthy creatures, Shih Tzus are subject to a kidney disease called renal dysplasia. Also, because of their short faces, this breed has to be handled with more care than some other breeds – a Shih Tzu’s respiratory system is compromised by his short nose, so don’t smoke or use strong chemical cleaning products around him. Also, short-faced dogs have a high risk of heatstroke, so minimizing your dog’s outdoor activity during the summer is essential.

Pro: All the cool kids have Shih Tzus
Because Shih Tzus are awesome, they have been a staple in the American Kennel Club’s Top 10 Most Popular Breeds since 2004.

Con: All the cool kids have Shih Tzus
The burden of any popular breed is abuse by puppy millers and backyard breeders, who damage the gene pool by mass mis-breeding dogs for profit and not for the betterment of the breed.

So if you feel a Shitzu is for you, please start your search with a breeder referral from the AKC or a breed-specific club (in this case the American Shih Tzu Club) – these resources will steer you in the right direction. Never buy a puppy off the internet with a “buy it now” tab. Instant gratification is all good and well until you find your puppy is replete with health problems from poor breeding.

I know there are differing opinions on the subject of well-bird check ups. Some people believe in having your apparently healthy parrot checked out once a year by a qualified avian vet, while others claim that taking a health bird into a vet office exposes them to “germies” they might not otherwise be exposed to. I am not going to lecture you on either. That is your choice. I am lucky enough to have a mobile avian vet that visits my house and I do have my parrots checked out once a year. But, you do what you think is right.

If you do take your bird in for a well bird check-up, here are some things that should be included:

Visual check: Looking at the ears, eyes, nose, mouth, etc. and making sure things appear as they should.

The touchy feely test: Feeling the bird to see if there are any lumps or other abnormalities the vet can feel.

Weight: Weight should be taken, in grams, every time.

Grooming: Wing and Nail trims, if needed.

Gram stain: The poop test – to make sure there are no bad things in the poopie.

Blood Work: Maybe. Possibly a chlamydia blood test and a complete blood panel. You don’t have to have these done every time. Ask your vet their opinion. Sometimes the vet may recommend more specific tests. And, just for the record, the bird does not have to be given anesthesia or “put under” to take a simple blood sample.

Ask Questions: Be sure to discuss any changes in behavior, health or diet related issues.

If your bird is not acting right, is tired a lot, lethargic, isn’t eating like normal, has a nasal or eye discharge, or just sits there all “poofed” out, you need to get to an avian vet as fast as you can. I mean today – not tomorrow. Better to be safe than sorry. So, repeat after me, “If my bird looks or acts sick, I will RUN not walk to my avian veterinarian.” Birds generally do not look or act sick until they are REALLY sick. They can take a turn for the worst very quickly.

Finding a vet

If you do not already have an avian vet, look in your local phone directory. Give them a call and see how many birds they treat. I know of several that advertise that they treat birds but only see a few per year.

You can also use these site to find an avian vet in your area.

Breeding A Chihuahua Responsibly

Breeding a Chihuahua is not something you want to do without the right knowledge. These little dogs have many difficulties during delivery (whelping). They are physically fragile dogs and have bones that are very easily broken and as a result, things can go wrong. You need to consult with your veterinarian prior to taking on this endeavor. Your pet needs a clean bill of health before being bred. You should be able to talk to your veterinarian anytime you need them with questions or concerns about the health of your Chihuahua and whether or not the dog can physically handle whelping.
Breeding Chihuahuas:
There is a lot more involved to the process of breeding than simply picking which two purebred Chihuahuas to breed together. You need a complete history of genotype and phenotype of the animals involved to prevent any possible genetic complications such as heart problems, patella luxations, leg perthes, liver shunts or any other type of condition.
When is the Right Time to Breed?
DO NOT mate a female unless her weight is at least four pounds. You will also need to make sure she is at least one year of age. A Chihuahua should not be bred during the first, second or even third heat because of delicate health.
Possible Complications During Pregnancy and Delivery:
Since Chihuahuas are so small, it comes as no surprise that an average litter size is only two puppies. Chihuahuas can have litters in range from one to four puppies.
It is important to remember that even though litters are not big, stillbirths are quite common. Your female may need an emergency Casearian section. There is always a danger that the mother might not make it through the surgery.
The heads of Chihuahua puppies are large and as a result, many are to large to pass through the birth canal. You will need to monitor the birthing process and if there
1000
are any distress signals or a long delivery, you will need to contact your veterinarian immediately.
Another thing to consider is that Chihuahuas oftentimes have breech births. You will need to have immediate veterinarian care or the assistance of one to guide you through the birthing process to help the puppies in the event of an emergency.
Chihuahuas might suffer from other medical complications such as uterine rupture, or an infection of the uterus. The bacteria from the uterine infection may cause the death of the mother or puppies, or both if left untreated. If you notice any pus mixed in with a bloody discharge before or after delivery, it could be a sign of an acute infection and your dog needs medical attention quickly. These may be signs of uterine infection and other warning signs include excessive urination, vomiting or a mother refusing to eat or nurse the puppies.
Your Chihuahua female may be afflicted with hypoglycemia, when the blood sugar levels drop so low the dog can go into shock, have a seizure or possibly die. The puppies may also suffer from hypoglycemia.
Shortly after giving birth, a female may suffer from Eclampsia or hypocalcemia, which is canine milk fever. The common warning signs of this disease include; lack of coordination, panting, eye twitching and severe spasming of the muscles. When this occurs it is very important that your Chihuahua gets immediate veterinary care.
If you are not sure about the health history of both the male and female, it is highly recommended you leave breeding to the professionals or purchase your Chihuahua from a reputable breeder, local rescue group or humane society.

Eclampsia, or milk fever, is an acute, life-threatening condition which attacks a brood bitch about 3 to 4 weeks after whelping puppies. It is more common in the small breeds of dogs that have had large litters.

Symptoms of eclampsia include stiffness, nervousness and restlessness. The brood bitch will loose interest in her puppies. She will very likely run a fever and have a rapid heart rate. In really severe cases of eclampsia the brood-bitch will have muscle spasms or seizures, and be unable to walk.

Eclampsia is commonly known as milk fever.

It is caused by low blood calcium at a time when the body needs to produce calcium-rich milk. It is treated by administering 10% calcium gluconate injections intravenously, at 0.25-0.75ml per pound body weight per hour. The brood-bitch will usually return to normal in less than fifteen minutes after treatment.

In really severe cases of eclampsia it may be necessary to wean the puppies or place their mother on a calcium supplement for the remainder of the lactation.

People often give their brood-bitch heavy calcium supplements during her pregnancy, however this does not prevent eclampsia, and can actually cause it to reoccur during future pregnancies.

Shih Tzu – Difficult Deliveries

Most Shih Tzu puppies present themselves normally at birth. There are times, very few times, of which I have experienced with the Shih Tzu that required assistance. Usually the most difficult Shih Tzu puppy birth is the first one. Delivery of a dry Shih Tzu puppy or overly large Shih Tzu puppy can take longer than normal and may affect the next Shih Tzu puppy birth. This next Shih Tzu puppy may be stillborn or have more fluid in the trachea and lungs. Oftentimes, subsequent Shih Tzu siblings are born normally.

Not every stillborn Shih Tzu puppy or difficult delivery is the result of a Shih Tzu matron suffering inertia. The problem of inertia, however, will cause a higher percentage of stillborn Shih Tzu puppies. Shih Tzu puppies are normally vigorous while attached to the uterine wall. Once freed from the uterine wall, a Shih Tzu puppy has limited time in which to arrive.

Once the Shih Tzu puppy has arrived, time is crucial. If the matron does not immediately tear the sac from around the puppy. You must quickly tear the sac from the Shih Tzu puppy’s face, nose and mouth and then proceed to remove the sac from the rest of the Shih Tzu puppy’s body. Rub the Shih Tzu puppy briskly while it is in a head-down position. Use a pediatric bulb syringe to suction the Shih Tzu puppy’s oral cavity. Clear the trachea and lungs by shaking the Shih Tzu puppy down. Each direction of the arc’s swing should take about 3 seconds. Repeat the procedures several times until the Shih Tzu puppy’s oral and tracheal passages are cleared as much as possible.

Dry Delivery:

A dry delivery is when the Shih Tzu puppy’s protective sac breaks inside the birth canal. A dry Shih Tzu puppy delivery can either a head-first or breech (rear quarters first). A Shih Tzu puppy breech birth is a normal canine birth position; however, a dry breech delivery can be dangerous to a Shih Tzu pu
1000
ppy. The Shih Tzu puppy is presented entirely or partially free of a sac. If the Shih Tzu puppy’s legs get stuck delivery progress is impeded. The Shih Tzu puppy’s head may turn back blocking passage or even its body turned sideways in the birth canal. Under these circumstances the Shih Tzu dam cannot deliver without assistance. Cooking oil may be substituted in an emergency to use as a lubricant.

While it is most important to get a Shih Tzu puppy breathing on its own as quickly as possible, the Shih Tzu puppy must never be pulled indiscriminately. You need to work with the Shih Tzu dam’s contractions. Place one hand in the dam’s inguinal area directly behind the Shih Tzu puppy’s position in the birth canal and exert a slight pressure to help prevent backward slipping. Grip the Shih Tzu puppy firmly with a towel in the other hand to prevent the Shih Tzu puppy from being withdrawn. Wait for the next contraction and exert a slight, steady pulling pressure downward toward the Shih Tzu dam’s feet. One or two contractions are usually enough to deliver the Shih Tzu puppy.

Your hands must be scrubbed, your nails trimmed and filed smooth in case adjusting the Shih Tzu puppy’s position is necessary. Use sterile surgical gloves or dip your hands in surgical antiseptic. Using a small amount of lubricant, gently insert one or two fingers into the Shih Tzu matron’s vagina. The Shih Tzu puppy should be palpable presenting facing the dam’s feet. You can feel if the Shih Tzu puppy is still confined or if the sac has been broken. If the Shih Tzu puppy is still in the sac, additional lubricant will not be needed.

If the Shih Tzu puppy’s head is foremost, gently ease the legs into the correct birth position. Gently push the Shih Tzu puppy a few millimeters back into the birth canal. Reposition the Shih Tzu puppy with the forelegs extended first. The Shih Tzu dam should then have little difficulty expressing the Shih Tzu puppy with one or two more contractions. Firmly hold the Shih Tzu puppy as it is presented and withdrawn back inside the birth canal at the end of contractions. If the Shih Tzu puppy presents itself head-first, keep the puppy’s face down toward the dam’s feet. If it is a breech delivery, hold the Shih Tzu puppy’s hind feet “facing” the dam’s paws.

Sound Effects Used To Catch Dog’s Attention For Picture Taking

Acting like a human being is something a dog rarely does not do at the most inconvenient times. According to the belief of some dog owners, dogs need to be loved and cared for because they are also emotional beings. The recognition and study made on dog moods, likes, and dislikes contribute to a successful animal portrait.

Wagging his tail and refusing to prick up his ears are instances when a dog shows he resents having his picture taken. He can be decidedly stubborn and drive the portrait artist to distraction. Hold the dog’s attention by using something to catch his sense of hearing, and it will give you an interesting and conspicuous pose. A dog who tries to search for a scent would ruin the gracefulness of the shot, but one who is mildly startled would prick up his ears and stand straight.

Taking the picture early in the morning is most recommended since it will be when he is most alert. The hungry dog shows alertness and can easily do the desired pose. During this time of the day, it is cool and so his mouth would not be hanging open as much compared to the later hours of the day. Dogs with mouths wide open and dogs that look tired don’t make good subjects.

The studios of dog photographers resemble in one respect the studios of radio broadcasting stations. Different kinds of sound effects are available for use just in case one sound effect cannot be used to bring out the attention the photographer wants. Many sounds can be produced, just like duck quacks and pop guns.

When a breeder looks at the proofs of his dog’s portraits, he expects to see perfection and all the good points of his dog. Dog photographers are resigned to the fact that what an artist puts into his sketches is differe
1000
nt from what a photographer should include in his canine portraits. The basis of an artist’s drawing is what is visible and not what is known. When working with dogs, the other way is true, and the photographer must be able to get into the picture what should be there and not what is seen.

The length of a daschund should be blown out of proportion. Dogs’ bodies should be slightly tilted at an angle and their feet should be placed firmly on the ground for the shot. The German boxer is the most complicated case out of all the breeds. Though quite a friendly dog at times, it can be nasty when other dogs are present.

Amateur photographers of dogs often lose sight of the fact that the hungry dog is the easiest to photograph. Amateur photographers who stuff their dogs will end up with lazy and disinterested subjects when the shoot takes place. A dog can assume the pose with no problem at all if he is alert.

Most photographers want the breeder absent when they are posing a dog. Dog owners can make a big fuss about a lot of things regarding their dogs, and it is for this reason that they do this. The master’s presence would not matter since the dog is already used to his tricks. Strange sound effects on the other hand would bring out the reaction needed from the animal.

Lovers of parrots would certainly be familiar with the African grey, as it is considered, by many, to be the most intelligent and affectionate bird in the world. Its popularity amongst bird lovers is such that there are now several African grey parrot rescue organizations, which have been specifically set up to rescue these wonderful birds from any danger, neglect and abuse they may be facing and adopt them out to loving families as pets.

If you are interested in helping out one of these organizations, or in adopting an African grey parrot for yourself, there are several things you can do. The first step would be to find out as much information as you can about the African grey and share that information with people you know, especially those who are considering keeping one as a pet. The grey is a highly exotic bird and many people do not really know how to properly care for such a magnificent creature. As such, these birds often end up in neglectful circumstances, not being well looked after, simply due to people’s lack of education and preparedness.

Another way that you can assist with African grey parrot rescue is to tell everyone you know that rescued parrots can be adopted through these organizations. The screening process for adoption is very thorough and people will not be considered as ‘parrot parents’ unless they are suitably qualified to take care of the bird, so remember, education about caring for an African grey is vital.

Last, but not least, you can help with parrot rescue by donating your time or money to a reputable organization. These organizations are usually self-funded and staffed by willing volunteers, so any help you could offer, in these areas, would certainly be much appreciated.

The African grey parrot would make an ideal pet for any family, large or small. Its intelligence and affectionate nature means that you would end up with a pet that is just as concerned about you and your well being as you are about it and it’s well being!

Support of parrot rescue organizations is vital for the health and preservation of these wonderful birds. You can find African grey parrot rescue organizations over the internet or perhaps in your local telephone directory.

1. Stay calm

Delivering puppies can be effortless at times so don’t panic. Large breeds are particularly easy.

2. Confine pregnant dog to a good location.

The first concern when your dog is delivering puppies is the location of the mother. A drafty cold area out of arms reach is the worst place a dog can have puppies. If your dog is currently in labor confine her to a location that is draft free, warm and easily accessible to you.

3. Get phone number for your vet or local emergency vet (for after hours).

See end of article for national emergency vet directory.

4. Gather supplies

Needed items include scissors, floss (or hemostat), heat pad, petroleum jelly, hand towel, calcium, (tums, vanilla ice cream, or dog supplement) {fyi- Calcium aids in birthing contractions of dogs}

5. Keep Mother calm

Limit the number of people and animals that are around the delivering mother. Stress from a crowd can put your dog out of labor for hours. Threatened mother dogs have been known to kill their puppies.

6. Once mother starts pushing or puppies start emerging give her the calcium

Calcium will help strengthening contractions; thus, making delivery quicker. Crush one tums and put in mothers mouth or use calcium paste supplement (recommended). or offer vanilla ice cream. If mother delivers several puppies then stalls you can give her some more calcium later.

7. Assist delivery

If the puppy emerges from birth canal halfway and then is stuck there for more than a few minutes you may need to apply the petroleum jelly as high up the birth canal as your finger can reach. (if possible use syringe to get jelly into birth canal). With the hand towel gently pull on puppy to assist birth. If puppy does not completely emerge within 10-15 minutes call your vet for advice, you may need to go to the vet.

Tip- if two puppy sacs appear in the birth canal at the same time and you cannot push one back in then you must go to the vet, your dog may need a c-section.

8. Cut and clamp the cord.

Tie dental floss as close to the puppies body as possible or clamp on hemostat. Cut the cord a half inch away from the floss with scissors. If floss comes undone, simply retie it. If you cannot get the floss tied don’t panic, the bleeding should stop on its own.

9. Keep puppies warm and dry.

Turn your heat pad on low and place puppies on it. Keep the area as dry and draft free as possible after birth is complete.

10. Monitor puppies and mother.

Make sure that all the puppies have started nursing within a few hours of birth. Maintain a warm, dry, stress free environment. If the mother starts shivering and shaking uncontrollably she may be in pre-eclampsia, extreme calcium shortage, you must contact your vet.

9 Dog Breeding Problems Fixed By Diy Canine Artificial Insemination

1. Behavioral Issues

Behavioral issues are a common reason breeders turn to AI. Here’s a few:

While a professional stud dog can usually unerringly respond successfully to receptivity in bitches, many – particularly young dogs – just do not “get” it. Frequently this is due to past punishment of mounting behavior. And some male dogs just have a low sex drive, especially submissive dogs that are naturally low in the dog social pecking order. Another frequently seen problem is the over-excited stud dog who becomes erect before successful penetration.

Being territorial animals, the confidence and therefore sexual activity of the dog is highest when they’re on their home turf. So for natural matings, the bitch should be brought to the male’s home otherwise his sexual activity could be inhibited. When this isn’t possible AI is a valid choice.

Bitches might also resist the advances of the planned sire and not permit breeding, for who knows what reason. Regularly this is just due to indecorous timing for the mating, but there are bitches who will resist mating even when in full estrus. Natural encounters with such bitches can damage a dog’s libido. Likewise some male dogs are so aggressive that natural mating isn’t advisable.

AI also safeguards the stud dog from injury which can occur if the bitch trounces about in a tie.

2. Protecting Your Male from STDs

For many stud dog owners, the choice to do canine artificial insemination exclusively is formed to offer protection to the dog from infection from a bitch.

3. Overcoming Physical Constraints

AI may be employed to get around a big difference in size between the b
1000
itch and the dog. In the male, AI can allow breeding despite weakness or pain when mounting due to osseous rheumatism, injury or prostatic disease. A dog with a missing limb or an injury to a rear leg or backbone may not be able to stand to tie bitches.

So long as the incapacity doesn’t reflect a genetic or structural unsoundness, canine artificial insemination can maintain the status of this dog as a useful sire.

4. Overcoming Distance Issues

If the bitch and the specified stud are some distance from one another, and transport of the bitch to the male isn’t practical, his semen can collected fresh and sent to her for insemination.

5. When There Are 2 Bitches to Mate at the Same Time

The ejaculate, if of top quality, can be split to cover two bitches.

6. Covering Timing Discrepancies

Fresh dog semen can stay viable for up to six days in the bitch. An early AI, a little before the dog or bitch are physiologically quite prepared to mate naturally, can be employed to effectively “cover” the following three or so days if other commitments preclude a natural mating in that period.

7. To Boost Litter Size

To maximize litter size many breeders can inseminate “one last time” shortly after the sexual interest of the bitch or dog has passed.

8. To Permit Semen Analysis before Breeding

Breeders that regularly use canine artificial insemination have the opportunity to assess their stud’s semen just as regularly. This is invaluable in picking up fertility issues before they become major or result in missed litters.

9. To Build Confidence in Young Stud Dogs

A competently managed semen collection can help the dog gain confidence and groom him for a natural breeding career, instead of excessively exhausting him from unsuccessful attempts at natural mating and spoiling him for natural breeding.

Why You Should Choose British White Cattle

The British White Cattle breed of today is a result of selective breeding for purity. British White Cattle possess characteristics and qualities that set them apart from other breeds of beef cattle. In the past they may have been known as a status symbol in medieval Britain but are now a mainstream beef cattle breed.

In today’s market the British White Cattle are being selected for a high quality beef breed due to their excellent feed to weight ratio and superior carcass and meat producing ability. They have always been known for their quality meat producing ability and excellent milking trait.

You do not have to look very far to find the many traits that make British White Cattle a profitable breed of registered beef cattle. They are an old British breed, white with black points, i.e. ears, muzzle, eyes and hooves. This color trait enjoys a high incidence of being passed on to their offspring. Being British and white are preferred traits not easily obtained from any other breed.

A naturally polled breed is the choice of most beef cattle ranchers and this fits the British White cattle breed. The offspring of a horned animal and a homozygous polled animal will be polled. Polled cattle always seem to sell higher on the commercial market and are less dangerous in close quarters.

Everyone is wanting a gentle breed of cattle and this is where British White Cattle are at the very top. Breeders who own them will tell you there are none better. A gentle or docile animal will always out perform a wild and high headed one in any situation you place them in. British White Cattle are good to adapt to whatever environment you have for them.

British White cattle are very fertile and are easy calving. Some will tell you they are just about the most fertile of
1000
any beef cattle breed. Consistently producing a calf every 12 months is one of their best traits.

The British White cow has well set udders with minimum of fatty tissue and medium sized teats that hold their shape. She has the ability to produce ample quantities of rich milk. An abundance of rich milk is available for the baby calf. Plenty of milk helps the baby calf to grow better. British white cows are excellent mothers, they have the nursery system of a guard cow protecting groups of calves while the remainder of the herd grazes. This instinct protects them against predators.

The carcass quality of British White cattle is usually very high. The will consistently hang a carcass of over 60% of live weight. It will be lean and tasty but also have a desirable amount of marbling.

You will find British White Cattle are trouble free, efficient and easy keeping. They seem to have a natural resistance to many diseases and parasites. Much of this may be attributable to their dark pigment and black points. While their white color makes them very heat tolerant it also grows long for winter protection in cold climates.

Longevity or ability to live a long and productive life span is a natural trait of the British White Cow. You will find many of them still producing at the ripe old age of 20 years. And since they are known to have a long life span it goes without saying that they will also make consistent contributions towards a profitable operation.

Why not try a British White bull if you are running a commercial crossbred herd. When bred to a British White bull cows will have an easy time calving and produce calves that hit the ground growing. You will be really pleased with your calf crop.

Find below a few tips when choosing the right dog breed.

Choosing the right dog breed for you and your family can be an exhausting task. It can take days to trawl through all of the information necessary to narrow your options down to a few breeds to choose from. That is, assuming you know where to start when choosing the right dog breed for you and your family in the first place. It can be difficult to know where to start, but with these tips, you will have a definitive starting point and a quick and simple task to complete!

1. Assess your home and family – You must start from the very beginning when choosing the right dog breed for you and your family, and your own home is as good a place as any to start. How big is it? How big is the yard? Do you have children? Are you out of the home quite a lot? All of these questions need answering and only then can you begin our search for the perfect dog breed.

2. Ask what you are looking for in a dog – It is essential that you know what you are looking for when choosing the right dog breed for you and your family. Do you want a gentle family pet? Would you be willing to go to a shelter? Do you want a playful breed or a more sedate one? Pair this information up with the answers to your first question and you can then begin to look at breeds.

3. Look on a comprehensive dog website – You do not need to go to many different resources until you have basic information on one or two breeds. Use a comprehensive site to cross-reference your answers to the above two points and list three or four breeds. Then you can look into the breeds in depth but get a good idea of where you are going when choosing the right dog breed for you and your family first!

Are you ready?

There are several things that you need to consider before you even think of getting a dog. Choosing the best dog breed for your family has to have a lot of thought put into it. Please have a look at some very good pointers that will clear that last doubt in your mind if you should get a dog for your family.

Before plunging into pet ownership, ask yourself WHY you wish to get a dog. Is it because…

Your child wants a dog and he/she will be the primary caretaker.

Your dog appears to be lonely and needs canine company.

You simply can’t resist the adorable doggie in the window.

If you answered “yes” to any of the above, avoid getting a dog. Here’s why:

It is unrealistic to expect your child to take full responsibility for a dog.

While it is wonderful to involve children in caring for a pet, it is unlikely and unfair to expect a child to make such a commitment. Once the novelty wears off, the responsibility will be put on the adults.

Dogs don’t “need” another canine companion.

While most dogs enjoy the companionship of other dogs, they don’t require it. And, if you don’t have enough time for one dog, you won’t have time for two! There is also no guarantee that they WILL get along.

Getting a dog on impulse is risky.

If you feel sorry for the dog, didn’t plan on stopping at the pet store or simply couldn’t resist, you may be off to a bad start. Make your decision carefully, as a dog is a commitment that lasts a lifetime.

Different Breeds of Dogs

Through our long association with the dog, we have initiated almost every change imaginable. Some of these changes have been selected through necessity, such as to help man with certain type of work, others purely in the interest of fashion and style. Some are of benefit to the dog, some are certainly not. The English Kennel Club has divided dogs into several different groups.

The Pastoral Group – This includes the herding dogs, bred to help man control and look after stock. These dogs are generally active, playful, like to chase and are relatively easy to train for the work they are asked to undertake. Some examples – German Shepherd

The Gundog Group – Originally bred to find and retrieve game, this group includes the retrievers, setters and spaniels. They are bred to work closely with man to be sociable and, usually, to have a good retrieving instinct. Some examples – Labrador Retriever, Cocker Spaniel, Golden Retriever

The Terrier Group – These dogs were originally bred to do a job that normally involved killing. Therefore, they are often more independent, and extremely brave and tough. When a dog is down a hole he has to make his own decisions, not wait to be told. Selective breeding has meant that most terriers are good pets with strong characters. Some examples – Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Bull Terrier

The Toy Dog Group – Most dogs in this group were bred to be companions or lap dogs. They are generally friendly and make affectionate pets. Some examples – Yorkshire Terrier

The Working Group – Many of these dogs were originally bred to guard and search, perhaps developed to protect man or livestock. There are also dogs developed to pull carts, boats or sleighs, as to search and rescue. Some examples – Boxer, Rottweiler, Doberman

The Hound Group – This includes the dogs who hunt by sight and those who use their sense of smell. Many of these dogs have been bred to hunt in packs, and these breeds in particular are very independent and often like to run and do their own thing. Some examples – English Foxhound

The Utility Group – These are breeds that do not fit into any of the other categories. All have been bred for some other purpose, but these vary considerably and therefore the dogs within this group are extremely varied. These groups don’t cover all dogs. There are other types that are not officially recognised by the English Kennel Club at this time.

Not all dogs are officially recognised by the Kennel Club.

These dogs include:

Jack Russell Terriers – These dogs have been bred for their working abilities for many generations. Their appearance can vary, and this includes size, coat texture, shape and temperament.

Working Sheepdogs – This term is used to describe the type of dog often seen working on farms and kept by many as pets. They often referred to as ‘Border Collies’ They are likely to have strong working instincts, and be energetic and active, requiring a great deal of exercise.

Lurchers – Originally, a Greyhound/Border Collie mix. Traditionally bred by gypsies or poachers, with the aim of producing a dog with the speed of a Greyhound and the trainability of a Border Collie to catch and retrieve rabbits. Nowadays, a lurcher is a type of dog, and may have many different breeds in his genetic make-up.

First Cross – This is a dog whose parents were both pedigrees, with know parentage, but of different breeds.

Crossbreed – Technically, this is a dog with known parents, although each parent may contain a variety of breeds.

Mongrel – Technically, a mongrel is a dog of know parentage. Although this is often used as a directory term by many people and breeders, mongrels from a large part of the dog population and there are many wonderful, unique characters among them.

If you are sure that you do want a dog and that you just don’t know which dog breed is right for your family, please have a look at the http://www.bestdogbreeds.org/Dog%20Breeds%20A-Z.htm for guidance in finding the right dog for your family.

Originating in Burma, the modern day country of Myanmar, the Birman has been traditionally associated with the Buddhist temples of the area and are considered sacred. For such a friendly, devoted, and loyal cat, it is a well deserved appellation. While the coloration can be similar, the Birman should not be mistaken for either the Siamese or Persian cat breeds.

All Birman kittens are born white and the adult coloration will slowly appear with time. The feet remain white which should stop at or between the second and third paw joints. On show quality Birmans, the white may rise a bit higher on the paw. After a week or two the color begins to show on a Birman kitten generally around the nose, ears and on the tail. The color points show most in these areas and it will be two years before the final adult coloration is displayed. The most common colors are eggshell and gold although seal, chocolate, cream, lilac, and blue are also found.

The eyes of the Birman are a distinctive sapphire blue throughout their lives and the ears are smaller than is normal in cats. Birmans are long and stocky. The fur, while being long and silky, is not prone to matting. Since they do not have an undercoating this makes their fur less thick compared to other cats and will require at most a weekly combing.

Birmans are not great climbers and will generally stay on or near the ground. They are gentle and are well suited to multi-animal homes or homes with children. They communicate with a soft call and do not roughhouse in their play. Unlike many cats, the Birman is not overly aggressive for attention and seems to understand when you are busy with something else. They prefer someone around and do not enjoy being left alone for long periods of time.

One of the most important health concerns is that you should guard against them overeating and growing fat.

For more information on this breed, and others, contact one of the reputable registered breeders listed at our Cattery Index Directory.
Black Labrador Puppy Breeders

What could be more fun than a Labrador puppy? What could be more fun than 8 Labrador puppies?

Black Labrador puppy breeders have the joy of giving a healthy, happy start to numerous wriggling bundles of energy and affection. Yet those who set out to be Black Labrador puppy breeders take on a great responsibility with the joy. A good breeder has a responsibility both to the animals in his or her care as well as to the potential owners.

Finding Good Black Labrador Puppy Breeders

You can begin your search for good Black Labrador puppy breeders by visiting the Labrador Retriever Club (LRC) on the Internet. THE LRC maintains a directory of breeders. Black Labrador puppy breeders are listed by state. They are not guaranteed, but they have had to complete applications to get their listings.

If you cannot find a breeder in the directory, try contacting the LRC. They may personally know a good breeder in your area.

Learn before You Leap

A Labrador puppy is nearly irresistible. That is why you should take time to learn about the breed before you go to see puppies. You might fall in love with the puppy before learning how big it will become and what its needs will be. Love might blind you to possible hereditary defects. If you don’t know the official standard for a Labrador puppy, you might pay a handsome price for a dog that falls short of that standard.

You should learn about responsible breeding practices, too. Before you contact your first Black Labrador puppy breeders, understand what they should be doing with and for the puppies.

Prepare a List of Questions

Before calling or visiting Black Labrador puppy breeders, prepare a list of important questions to ask. If you want a Labrador puppy to take on hunting trips, yo
1000
u should ask questions about its potential as a gun dog. If you are looking for a companion, family dog, you will want to know about its temperament, and whether it has been socialized. The following are only a handful of other questions you should ask:

* Has the breeder had the parents’ hips and elbows X-rayed to be sure there are no dysplasias? A Labrador puppy can inherit a tendency for these potentially crippling abnormalities of joint formation. Breeders who try to be sure that both parents, and as many of the bloodline as possible are radiographically free of hip and elbow dysplasia are showing care for the breed as well as each puppy. The parents may not show any outward signs yet of the painful arthritis associated with hip and elbow dysplasia, but their joints should be checked by x-ray examination before breeding.

* Did the breeder invest time and money to have the parents’ eyes checked for eye defects that could lead to poor eyesight or blindness? Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA), a disease that results in blindness, develops gradually. Although Retinal dysplasia seldom results in blindness, it does cause poor eyesight. Breeders should have the parents of a Labrador puppy checked for all eye problems.

* Ask if the breeder has had every Labrador puppy examined by a qualified veterinarian. Is there a guarantee regarding each puppy’s health? What are the terms of the guarantee?

Be Observant

When you do visit Black Labrador puppy breeders, keep your eyes open. Are the kennels and the yard clean? If a puppy left a stool that the breeder has not had time to scoop, look at it. It should be well-formed, and not runny.

Look at each Labrador puppy, whether or not that specific one is of interest to you. Do they all have shining, clear, clean eyes? Are their coats clean and glossy? Are they alert and playful? Even if the best puppy has been reserved for you, the health of its litter mates will tell you much about the general care they receive.

Taking Home Your Own Labrador Puppy

When you find the Labrador puppy you want, arrange to have it examined by your own veterinarian as soon as possible after you pick it up from the breeder. Have the vet assure the puppy is in good health.

Huge Maine Coon Cats – How Big Are They?

The Maine Coon Cat breed is known for many striking characteristics. Not the least of these is its size. Huge Maine Coon Cats are quite something to behold!

Myths and legends abound when it comes to a big Maine Coon Cat. We’ve all heard a story at some point about a massive Maine Coon of enormous proportions. So just how big are they, compared to most cats?

An average housecat weighs between 8 and 11 pounds. If they weigh more, they are probably on the chubby side. A female Maine Coon usually weighs between 9 – 13 pounds. Then there are the boys. Males usually tip the scales at around 13 – 18 pounds. There are definitely some huge Maine Coon Cats out there!

The physique of a Maine Coon Cat is solid. This breed of cat is strong, muscular, and well proportioned. So a large Maine Coon will have a frame to hold his weight. That means he’ll be noticeably longer and wider than most other cats. Now, add a shaggy coat and a massive tail. What a specimen!

“What about really huge Maine Coon Cats?” you ask. It’s true, many males end up growing well past the average. It’s not unusual to hear of a 20 pounder, and sometimes even 25 – 30 or more pounds! These are definitely huge Maine Coon Cats.

Many people want to know where to get a very large Maine Coon. This happens especially when there are photos of big Maine Coon Cats circulating on the Internet. Some folks see pictures of huge Maine Coon Cats and ask, “Where can I get one of those?”

That is certainly part of the allure of this breed. If you are ready to commit to a new cat in your life, you’ll want to make sure the Maine Coon Cat breed is right for you. Then you’ll want to locate a responsible breeder in your area. Most breeders will not breed specifically for size. They are breeding to a standard, breeding great specimens in order to produc
1000
e, with each litter, the best example possible of what a Maine Coon is meant to be.

Also, Maine Coon kittens are born to be a certain size. Feeding them extra food or supplements won’t make their bones grow longer. It’ll only make them fat, and perhaps raise the risk of hip dysplasia.

All Maine Coon kittens are genetically predestined to be larger than an average cat. But just like in human families, there will be the occasional kitten who falls below the lowest “average threshold” and ends up being an 8 pound beautiful Maine Coon. There will also be some who are clearly going to be big, going above and beyond the high end of 18 pounds. The breeder will be able to tell you. So, put in a request for a big boy and your breeder will work with you.

Huge Maine Coon Cats are mysterious and alluring. Of course, there is a lot more to this breed than just size. If this is the breed for you, learn about their characteristics, personality, and then fall in love with a Maine Coon of your own!

Sometimes puppies are born that can’t suckle properly, and it’s almost alway’s because they have a cleft palate. A cleft palate can be a complete division up the middle of the palate, or roof of the mouth, or it can just be a small hole in the palate.

Canine cleft palate is a failure of the two sides of the palate to fuse correctly during the embryonic stage of developement. It can just be the soft tissue, in which case it only presents as a cosmetic malformation, but if the hard palate is affected, it inevitably spells doom for the new born pup. A cleft pale in dogs can be either a genetic defect, or due to something occuring during the developement of the embryo.

Surgical correction of cleft palate

All puppies should be examined for a cleft palate as early as possible, by opening the jaws and looking at the roof of the mouth. If the breed is very small, it may be necessary to get your Vet to check for you.

It is possible to correct a cleft palate surgically, however the pup must be old enough to undergo an anaesthetic, so in the early stages of it’s life the puppy will need hand feeding with a stomach tube.

Cleft palate of the outer soft tissue, sometimes called canine hare lip, can repaired surgically at about six months of age. Small holes in the roof of the mouth can self correct as the pup grows older, but may also be corrected surgically if so desired.
